Picture your ideal backyard retreat: a place to unwind, entertain friends, and connect with nature without feeling like you're on display for the whole neighborhood. For many homeowners in Evanston, Wilmette, and the north side of Chicago, creating this private oasis can feel challenging due to the close proximity between neighbors. While fencing provides a quick solution, it can also make a yard feel closed in and detached from the neighborhood. So, what's the alternative?

At Harmony Circle Gardens, we specialize in using natural plantings and clever landscape design to create green privacy screens - living borders that provide seclusion without sacrificing beauty or neighborhood unity.

How does this work?

Think of your property border as a blank canvas, ready to be filled with an artful array of trees, shrubs, and lush foliage. The specific plant palette is chosen carefully based on the unique layout of your yard, the style of your home, and how you want to use the space.

Evergreen Options: A Classic Choice

Let's start with a classic choice: the evergreen hedge. Popular options include arborvitae, yew, and boxwood. These sturdy plants come in a range of shapes and sizes to suit any space. While it may be tempting to go big with something like a soaring Green Giant arborvitae, it's important to consider scale - a mature Green Giant can reach 50 feet tall and 15 feet wide, overwhelming a typical residential lot and potentially interfering with power lines. In most cases, a more modest option like the Emerald Arborvitae, which tops out around 10 feet, is plenty tall for privacy while staying in proportion to the home. Selecting plant varieties with growth habits and mature sizes that suit the space is one area where the expertise of a landscape designer really shines.

Deciduous Trees & Shrubs: Seasonal Screening

But evergreens aren't the only option. Deciduous trees and shrubs can provide seasonal screening that evolves with the landscape. One of our recent projects involved planting an autumn blaze maple to obscure a homeowner's view of an unattractive alley. In the summer months, when the yard sees the most use, the tree's dense canopy completely blocks the alley; in the winter, bare branches allow sunlight to penetrate while still providing some visual separation. For a lower screen, try massing deciduous shrubs like viburnum, chokeberry, or dogwood along a property line - these create a dense, leafy screen in summer, a colorful display in fall, and an attractive arrangement of branching structure in winter.

Beyond Plants: Hardscaping for Privacy

When it comes to creating privacy within a larger landscape, don't overlook hardscaping. Pergolas, arbors, and trellises not only add striking visual interest but also help define smaller "rooms" within the greater yard for intimate gathering spaces. A series of trellises along a property line creates an attractive framework for climbing vines like clematis, which adds to the natural screening effect as it grows in. Even strategic placement of large planters can make a seating area feel secluded - fill them with tall, airy grasses, vivacious perennials, or compact shrubs to envelop the space with greenery.

Creating Auditory Privacy

Finally, while we often think of privacy in the visual sense, don't forget to plan for auditory privacy as well. Thoughtfully placed plantings can create a natural sound buffer to muffle street noise or sounds from neighboring properties. Water features offer another sound-masking option - the gentle white noise of a bubbling fountain or a cascading waterfall can help drown out less desirable sounds while enhancing the backyard's overall ambiance.
